What is a root canal?
The area of the tooth called the pulp carries the tooth’s nerves, veins, arteries, and lymph vessels. This is located under your tooth’s enamel, and within the dentin. Root canals are very small divisions that branch off from the top of the pulp to the tip of the root. A tooth has no more than four root canals.
If a tooth has been fractured, or has developed a deep cavity, the pulp can become infected. To save the tooth, the pulp and bacteria needs to be removed, and the canals need to be sterilized and filled. A crown is usually necessary to complete the restoration of the tooth.
Root canal therapy takes about two hours and may require two visits to our West Orange cosmetic dentistry practice. The procedure is completed with rotary endodontic tools and with numbing medication, making it a fairly quiet and gentle treatment.
If you are experiencing pain, or are bothered by heat, cold or biting too hard, a root canal may be required.
