How do Crowns (dental caps) work?

How do crowns work?

A dental crown is used to cover, or "cap" a damaged tooth. The damaged tooth is prepared in an exact fashion so that the crown fits perfectly.  The crown then looks, feels and functions like a perfectly healthy tooth!

Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve the tooth's appearance, shape or alignment.  A crown can also be placed on top of an implant where it will act just like a natural tooth.  The porcelain (ceramic) on the crown can be matched to the color of your natural teeth or can be used to go to a lighter, brighter shade.  Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic.  Porcelain bonded to metal most is often used because it is both strong and attractive.  There are different types of metal that can be used but we are old school and use only gold alloys as that is the best material possible.

We may recommend a crown to:

Repair a tooth that has fractured already

Has had a root canal procedure performed

Over a dental implant

We can use cosmetic crowns to improve the looks of not a very attractive tooth or make a misaligned tooth straighter.

Dental crowns are cemented and not removeable.  They can be performed easily and painlessly.
